She quoted the following representative quotation from Social Problems, which indicates, she said, that even the great Christian leaders were enemies and debasers of women: The Apostle Paul was a defender of male dominance…. It has been said that Paul was a woman hater…. Luther was as uncompromising as Paul in this matter. Woman’s place was in the home and as a bearer of children. This was her prime duty and her life. If she die bearing children, let her die, that is what God placed her here for, was Luther’s sentiment. She added that knowing what she knew (what she had learned) about the true character of the Christian code, certainly I would not censure her for renouncing it! She was merely sloughing off the old–the Cultural Fossils in Orthodoxy which Professor Barnes lists in his The Twilight of Christianity as the conception of the soul, immortality, sin, spiritual things, prayer and the notion of the sacred. My own sociology professor teaches: Jesus Himself did not believe in the absurd asceticism and slavish morality which Paul incorporated in the religion which He founded. Indeed, Jesus, in condoning the offense of the woman apprehended in adultery, set the stamp of His approval, as boldly as He dared in face of the intolerant mob, upon sexual relations based on mere inclination. She was, she thought, sloughing off these archaic fossilized concepts, that she might take on the new.
