""Der Freischutz"" is a romantic opera in three acts composed by German composer Carl Maria von Weber in 1821. The libretto, written by Johann Friedrich Kind, tells the story of a young forester named Max who makes a deal with the devil in order to win a shooting contest and marry his beloved Agathe. However, the consequences of his actions lead to tragedy and he is ultimately saved by the power of love.First performed in Berlin in 1821, ""Der Freischutz"" quickly became a popular and influential work in the German operatic tradition. It is known for its innovative use of orchestration, including the use of horns and other woodwind instruments to create a haunting and atmospheric sound. The opera also features a number of memorable arias and ensembles, including the famous ""Wolf's Glen"" scene in which Max encounters supernatural forces in a haunted forest.This edition of ""Der Freischutz"" was published in 1904 and includes the full libretto in German, as well as an introduction and notes by Friedrich Kind.
