In the wake of World War II, Jamaica, like the rest of the world, is recovering emotionally, economically and socially. Suspended dreams are now being revived; the futures of the McFarlane sisters look bright as they prepare to pursue their studies abroad at the world-class universities. Julius McFarlane, first-born and heir-presumptive to Grandfield, the largest sugarcane plantation on the island, however, deplores his own fate. Unlike his sisters and by his yoke to the family estate, he must abandon his own dreams in order to take care of the plantation. Clutched in an embrace with the excessive possessiveness of his mother, the strong bond between him and his father and inveterate sibling rivalries, Juliusas love affair with larger-than-life Norma Morrison is also ruined. With these events being played out in Jamaicaas upper-class multi-racial society, Juliusas love affair is not the only thing that is destroyed; the devastation is far-reaching. Yet, out of this morass, renewal blooms.
