Comanche Epitaph chronicles the epic flight of a band of Quohada after their defeat in the Palo Duro Canyon of Texas. The account puts human faces on the demoralized Indians, and brings to life the personalities of the survivors as they flee across the high plains. It anguishes with the leaderas soul-wrenching decision to return, and surrender to captivity for the sheer preservation of his people. The story documents the internal power struggles, as the escaping Indians fight the elements and starvation to endure. This novel, in contrast, also highlights the thrills and guilt of the triumphant young Cavalrymen.
