De Mysteriis And De Reditu is a book written by Andocides and first published in 1889. It is a collection of two speeches, De Mysteriis and De Reditu, that were delivered by Andocides in ancient Athens. The first speech, De Mysteriis, is about the Eleusinian Mysteries, a religious festival that was held in honor of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Andocides defends himself against accusations of having participated in the mutilation of the herms (statues of the god Hermes) that took place just before the festival. He argues that he is innocent and that the accusations against him are based on hearsay and false testimony. The second speech, De Reditu, is about Andocides' return from exile. He had been banished from Athens for his alleged involvement in the mutilation of the herms and the profanation of the Mysteries. In this speech, Andocides explains how he managed to secure his return to Athens by making a deal with the Spartan king, Agesilaus. He also defends himself against accusations of having betrayed Athens to the Spartans. De Mysteriis And De Reditu provides valuable insights into the political and religious life of ancient Athens. It also sheds light on the workings of the Athenian legal system and the use of rhetoric in public speaking. The book is of interest to scholars of ancient history, classical literature, and rhetoric. This Book Is In English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
