Stephan Oblong is a merchant mariner on shore leave. He has returned to his Midwest hometown to spend some time with his parents and to, reluctantly, attend his ten-year high school class reunion. He reconnects with an old friend and this reconnection blossoms into a needed romantic respite for both. She confides in him of a confusing situation at her job that overflows into their private lives. They confide in a local FBI agent. They uncover a conspiracy involving three crime organizations with seemingly dissimilar goals. The conspiracy involves an attack on the U.S. capital. They have occasions to meet and evade hired professional killers that are pursuing them. The final resolution is confounded by a wild card in the deck. It becomes confusing to Stephan as to which residence really is his home.
