Claudius is a large, orange cat. He lives with Mr. and Mrs. Farmer who seem to think he is one of the family. This works out well since their children have all grown up and moved away. Claudius is not only a pet, heas also their watchcat. When Mr. and Mrs. Farmer are busy, he climbs up on the big scarecrow to guard the garden and the pumpkin patch. He guards the pumpkin patch especially well because he loves pumpkin pie. Mr. Farmer grows prize-winning pumpkins and Mrs. Farmer makes bread and pies from the pumpkins he grows. They take the prizes at the county fair too. Once, when Mr. and Mrs. Farmer went to town to visit friends, Claudius did a very smart and brave thing. Then they knew for sure what a special cat Claudius was.
