Satires: Le Lutrin (1867)

Nicolas Boileau Despreaux

To my family and friends who believe that God is unbelievableA[a–aanything to do with religion is not discussed because it is not relevant in todayA[a–a[s times. Besides, people will think you have a few screws loose. For the one who has no knowledge of God, He is unbelievable. Where confusion abounds is trying to relate religion with God. This is crazy! But, alas, donA[a–a[t go away, read on for the explanation. The difference, which is huge, can be explained thusly. God with an individual is a one-to-one relationship and is vertical. Religion, on the other hand, is a congregational situation which is horizontal, where like-minded people may congregate and associate in various venues: churches, meeting halls, etc. One may now see that there is no relationship between God and religion. God is north. Religion is east and west, and you know where south goes.
