By marrying the overseer of a sugar cane plantation, young, independent Cornelia Thornton forsakes her life of privilege in Boston for an alien land and its people. Soon she finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage that slowly erodes her spirit and threatens to clip the wings of her individualism. Rather than sink into bottomless despair over her misfortune, Cornelia decides to salvage something from her life on the plantation. She accompanies the old company doctor on his weekly treks into the mountains to attend the sick and the poor plantation workers.
