Sonja Mayer has been a writer and oil painter for most of her life. A former columnist for The Daily Southerner of Tarboro, North Carolina, Mayer has traveled and lived throughout the eastern and southeastern United Statesaallowing influences of diverse cultures, ranging from New Orleans and South Mississippi to the foothills of Virginia, to flavor her work. Yet the journey that has been most significant has been the road that has taken her from near-death to near-life and from the edge of suicide to the recurring echo of security. This road is one that is walked daily by many men and women who are struggling with mental challenges. Sharing that road through poetry, Behind My Eyes chronicles the walk of one woman who has refused to surrender to both illness and a past from which she could not run.
