On March 25, 1300, in arguably the greatest classic in Christian literature, Dante and Virgil met and began their journey together through Hell. In the subsequent 700 years, much has changed but nothing dims the glory of Danteas exploration into the nature of sin and repentance. But Dante assumes much of his reader and we, at centuries remove, often feel ill-equipped to follow him on his journey. We must be aware of the biography of famous medieval Italians, have some acquaintance with Italian geography and topography, medieval science and theology and most of all the Latin poets of the Roman gold and silver ages. Like Dante, we need a Virgil to guide our steps. Enter Rev. Woods, who, dogging Dante and Virgilas steps, acts as tour guide, pointing out the sights, elucidating medieval theological and philosophical ideas, making the arduous, if not less strenuous, then, at least, intelligible.
