Le Roi S'amuse: A Tragedy (1877) is a play written by Victor Hugo, one of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. The play is set in 16th century France and tells the story of the aging King Francis I and his court, who are entangled in a web of love, lust, and betrayal. The king's favorite court jester, Triboulet, becomes embroiled in a dangerous game of revenge and passion when he discovers that the duke of Mantua has seduced his daughter. As the plot unfolds, the characters' passions and desires lead to a series of tragic events that ultimately lead to the downfall of the king and his court. The play was controversial when it was first performed due to its frank depiction of sex and violence, and was banned by the French government for over 50 years. Today, Le Roi S'amuse is considered a classic of French literature and is widely regarded as one of Hugo's greatest works. This Book Is In English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
