During the flu pandemic of World War I, while working to develop a vaccine, the Transylvanian Dr. Suzana Papp discovers a way to indefinitely preserve microbes. She embedded tooth samples harvested from flu victims into an amber-like resin. Due to the unfavorable events of that time, she stored her working notes and the collection of amber pearls in a jewelry case. Intrigued by the contents of an old box inherited from her grandmother, the ambitious Dr. Camelia Salva believed that the pretty artifacts could be a source for deadly bio-weapons. Now, her priority was to find reliable partners and a clinical laboratory. Then the Spanish flu virus, presumably dormant in the tooth of a long-deceased patient, could be safely awakened. It was imperative that the secrets of Dr. Papp be unraveled before malevolent people could use her theory to unleash a worldwide bioterrorism attack with a virus against which no defense was yet available.
