Anti-Slavery Crusaders in the West 1830-1840 is about a group of people who tried to settle the issue of slavery in the United States. Unfortunately, there was not enough goodwill among the public to accept the challenge. The author explores views given in the Bible and the writings of early Church Fathers. The Constitution and the Northwest Ordinance contradicted each other on the disposition of slaves. This became evident when Kentucky and the Northwest Territory states moved toward statehood. The abolition movement was faltering and losing momentum in the East. Theodore D. Weld and James Birney formed a partnership to shift the slavery battle to the West and pursue a more moderate course to win the hearts and minds of the public. The abolition movement, which was a religious crusade to end slavery, called it a personal sin to own slaves. Moreover, these same men and women would be the nucleus of the Underground Railroad.
