Hygiene of the Eye (1918)

An anonymous teenage girl is brought into an emergency room, beaten senseless and beyond recognition. Against the odds, she survives. Forensics reveal her attacker to be her biological father, but her identity remains unknown. Danny Starling is a promising young Physician’s assistant who cares for the girl, rehabilitates her, and grows to love her. When he discovers that she is to be institutionalized, he abandons his career to help her escape. The girl begins to recognize her surroundings as the towpath of the C&O Canal takes them closer and closer to her family home. But her lifeline is again severed during a violent incident which she interprets as Danny’s murder, and she is left stranded in the woods, alone.
