At the outbreak of World War II, a mild-mannered young German boy is caught up in his country’s quest for world power. But he doesn’t possess the same zeal for this adventure that his comrades do. One of his best friends, a member of the SS, tries to convince him of the righteousness of this conflict and the benefits it will bring to his country. Our protagonist meets a girl while on leave, and they quickly fall in love. He talks his sweetheart into sneaking out of Germany to live with him in Switzerland. After much debate, his SS friend agrees to go along to assist their escape into Switzerland. Near the Swiss border they obtain assistance from the German underground. Sadly, things go very wrong when they try to cross the border.
