Brewster Boutique is a sequel to the novel Hats Can Kill. It continues the story of the now-adult children, C. J. and Marty Hale. It follows their dreams of Marty starting a business called Brewster Boutique and her friendship with Bill Cunningham, and C.J. becoming a lawyer to assist homeless people, and his subsequent marriage to Beth Morgan, Martyas friend and partner. Although the relationship between Marty and her mother improve as the years go by, Marty still has resentment toward her mother and there are continuing family conflicts resulting in more than one crisis with devastating results.
