The world is suddenly torn apart by massive, continuous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Nearly all man-made structures are destroyed by the shaking earth or the raging fires. Food and water supplies quickly disappear; disease is rampant. The very few who survive do so through violence or inborn survival instincts. Dirk, who was hunting near his cabin in the deep woods of northeastern Minnesota, is one of the few who survives. He seeks others and finds both friends and enemies. He finds love, only to lose it - and avenges its loss. He uncovers the terrible lie that a man in a group that befriends him has kept secret. It leads Dirk’s taking of a life. He meets a man who becomes a traveling companion, a mentor, and his one true friend to the bitter end, the man who returns to where it all started, to await the final ending.
