The year is 1922 and the times are fast changing into a dizzying era of ups and downs; the Roaring Twenties. Ramonde Clochaude, though born into New Orleans’ world of vice, is precipitously thrust upon the world of the well-to-do when he is taken away and sent north. Upon returning to New Orleans some years later with money and experience, he joins with a boyhood friend to supply the city’s restaurants with wines and liquors. However, his bonds of loyalty and friendship carry him to Chicago when his friend and business partner runs afoul of the authorities in New Orleans, and they decide to flee the city together. Again, he establishes a successful business enterprise, but then there ensues a tragedy of classical proportions. Between the times he loses his home and family and gains life anew in the North, Ramonde grows and matures in ways that are oftentimes typical of our national character.
