David Browning is running from the loss of his job and a shattered marriage. In a lonely, out-of-the-way cafA© he meets a young woman, a hitchhiker who has been summoned home by her father. Lonely and at loose ends, he offers to take her wherever she is going and she leads him to a small abandoned town in the middle of nowhere, where a horror that he never dreamed existed awaits them both. David reluctantly assumes responsibility for protecting the girl and her father against an evil that envelops the town and he must reach deep inside himself to overcome the terror that emanates from the village church and threatens to destroy their sanity and their very lives.
