I grew up in Acushnet, Massachusetts, a small town just on the outskirts of Cape Cod. I spent most of my summer days either playing baseball, umpiring baseball, coaching baseball or watching baseball. I worked for AT&T for 23 years. I always had a soft spot for kids and looked forward to having nine of my own. I never imagined how difficult and yet rewarding having kids could actually be. Today I live in Longwood, Florida, with my wife Susan, 2 sons, Matt and Nick, and our two Golden Retrievers, Boomer and Jake. I wanted to tell the story of the amazing journey the birth of our son Nicholas, who was born with Spina Bifida, has taken us on. This is a story of one child faced with incredible odds, but with the help of Major League baseball and faith, not only persevered but influenced the lives of so many by his extraordinary acts of kindness and sincerity.
