Daniel Lanter is born to Vicky Rollins, a sixteen-year-old high school senior, in the year of 1946. It is with a heavy heart and a foreboding premonition that Vicky is forced to sign the papers allowing her son to be adopted. The adoptive couple provide a loving, stable home for the youngster; however, when he turns two, they are killed on an icy road in Chicago. Danny is then placed in a foster home where he is used as a servant and treated with brutality. At seventeen, after a violent altercation, he finally flees this ahouse of horrors.a Receiving no love as a child, Danny grows up with a crippled spirit, sabotaging every relationship, every job and even a promising career in baseball.
