The legend of King Arthur has provided a rich harvest for many authors. He has also been remembered by many names. One of these was Artos, the Bear. Here is a fresh approach to his legend, discarding visions of a noble sophisticate with a taste in circular furnishings for one who is gauche, fundamental, licentious and politically shrewd. After the Romans depart from Britain, new invaders arriveaJutes, Angles and Saxons. Artos, son of a petty British chieftain, attempts to unite the squabbling tribes and prevent their annihilation. Accompanying Artos on his mission is Gwyneth, princess of a neighboring clan. Successfully completing his mission, Artos is proclaimed king of the newly formed tribal confederation. The story records his battles, victories and defeats. It is replete with accounts of love, mysticism, loyalty, treachery and death, which glorified and stained that period of ancient Britain.
