The story of Pinetown takes place in 1935 on a small truck farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Jeff is a paraplegic as was the author’s brother. The author fictionalized his brother into an orphaned town-raised cousin who had to adapt to farm living. To get his cousin about so he could join in neighborhood activities they build a push-mobile, a human powered cart. They attempt to find what it was that nearly scared the life out of them on a buggy trip through the Big Woods in the dark and try to solve a 30 year old murder. They narrowly escape from a burning building. They deal with a board that is wary of Jeff’s adoption by the Eversons. Despite his handicap Jeff finds ways to contribute to the farm. Jeff and Duke are a team equal to the problems they face.
