Adaline Turner, born in Duxbury, Vermont, in 1833, married George Crandall in 1857. In the early 1880s, they purchased a farm several miles from Duxbury in a town near Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. In 1883, Addie began what is believed to be her first diary for her childrenas sake. She was extremely devoted to her family, giving birth to eight children, one of whom died at seven months old. Hardships were many living on a farm, which included daily chores like laundry, making bread, cooking meals, keeping a home, raising children and rarely getting a break. The needs of her family always came first. Addie was forty-eight when she gave birth to her youngest child. Her diary accounts are included in this book along with personal reflections from the author. As you read these words, you will be amazed at the similarities, challenges and differences with our lives today.
