Brothers Frank and William Bell, after signing on with a sailing ship for a voyage to the South Indies, realize they have made a drastic mistake. They jump ship off the coast of New Jersey and make their way across America with the help of several tribes of Indians and a runaway slave. They battle the elements, bandits, and the vastness of this great land. Befriending a government agent, and with the help of an Indian girl, they finally reach the Louisiana Territory, only to become separated by a buffalo stampede while traveling on the Great Plains.
