Sinnott’s Catechism on Infantry Drill: Adapted to the Present Field Exercise and Evolutions of Infantry, with the Addition of Questions on Brigade Movements (1871)

John Sinnott

The Army has their medics. The Marines have their corpsmen, and they wouldnat leave their landing craft without one. The Army medics are selected from within their ranks. Corpsmen, on the other hand, are Navy personnel attached to the Marine Corps. Rather than spending their tour sailing the seven seas, corpsmen train with Marines, fight with Marines, save Marine lives, and die with Marines. This has been the case since 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Since then corpsmen served in World Wars I and II, Korea, Viet Nam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. During World War II, corpsmen were at the forefront of every invasion. Eight hundred and eighty-nine were mortally wounded. Seven corpsmen received the Medal of Honor. Tell a corpsman heas not a Marine? Best not. aYou can take a corpsman out of the Corps, but you canat take the Corps out of the corpsman.a
