University lecturer, Danae Greenway is crew on a yacht which sinks in the Coral Sea. She is rescued by a starship searching for Europa Adele, prodigal princess of the Golden Inlet, a star cluster of the Orion Spiral, with whom she inadvertently shares her genome. She falls in love with Sean Pelosi, a palace guard, but, homesick for Earth, she persuades a physicist developing an interplanetary bio-transmitter to send her home. The transmitter’s time focus is faulty, consistently depositing Danae/Europa Adele in a jumble of historical epochs. Sean follows and their affair flourishes from the Stone Age through time from the Stone Age onwards. In the Minoan Crete of 1200BC, Danae becomes a bull dancer. In an attempt to avert the earthquake which ultimately destroys the Minoan palaces, priests decide to sacrifice her to Poseidon, the Earthshaker. When the latter’s white bull tosses her over a cliff into the sea, Danae finds herself in 21st century Crete, confronted by Sean and a puzzled Greek policeman.
