The Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe, 1599 (1913)

George Peele

The Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe is a play written by George Peele in 1599. The story is based on the biblical account of King David's affair with Bathsheba. The play is set in ancient Israel and tells the story of King David, who becomes infatuated with Bethsabe, the wife of one of his soldiers, Uriah. David sends Uriah to the front lines of battle, hoping he will be killed, so he can have Bethsabe for himself. Uriah is killed in battle, and David takes Bethsabe as his wife. However, their happiness is short-lived as their child dies and David is plagued with guilt. The play explores themes of love, lust, power, and the consequences of one's actions. The Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe was first published in 1599 and has been adapted for the stage numerous times. This edition was published in 1913 and includes an introduction by the editor, W.W.
