The Life and Exploits of Alexander the Great Being a Series of Translations of the Ethiopic Histories of Alexander by the Pseudo Callisthenes and Other Writers
- E. A. Wallis Budge was the Curator of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum from 1894 to 1924. Budge is perhaps best known for translating The Egyptian Book of The Dead (also known as The Papyrus of Ani), as well as analyzing many of the practices of Egyptian religion, language and ritual. He was also involved in numerous archaeology digs in Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Sudan. The object of this work is to present to students and lovers of the legendary history of Alexander the Great the various histories of this marvelous man which are extant in the Ethiopic language, together with English translations of the same and some necessary notes. The collection of texts contained in this volume consist of the Ethiopic version of the Pseudo-Callisthenes; the Ethiopic versions of the Arabic histories of Alexander by Al-Makin and Abu Shaker; the Ethiopic version of the Hebrew history of Alexander by Joseph ben-Gorion; a short account of Alexander’s death and of the utterances of the sages thereon; the Christian Romance, which is probably an original Ethiopian work; and an account of the Vision of Abba Gerasimus.
