  1. From the Foundations of the See of Rome to the Present Time Volume VI of VII. Bower asserted that he had been a Jesuit and a counselor of the inquisition in Italy, that he had escaped and had become a Protestant. Bower ended up in Scotland, where he was befriended by Lord Lyttelton. Through Lyttelton’s influence, he was appointed librarian to the queen, and clerk of the buck-warrants. But, John Douglas, afterwards bishop of Salisbury, published proofs that Bower’s story was false and that his works were plagiarized from other authors. He defended himself vigorously so far as his own story was concerned, and gradually completed his History in seven volumes. The book, which was avowedly written against the claims of the see of Rome, is considered by some to have no literary merit. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
