  1. A treasury of Elizabethan and Shakespearean detail for producers, stage managers, actors, artists and students. Illustrated with nearly 200 pictures and portraits, mostly from contemporary sources. Hatcher, founder of Bryn Mawr’s Department of Comparative Literature and advocate for educational and vocational opportunities for women, writes that Part I of this volume, provides the foundations on which the understanding of the latter half of the book should rest-the account of Shakespeare’s England, of his life so far as we know it, and of the more important facts about his works. Part II proposes plans for Shakespeare festivities, fitting most of them into plans for one large pageant, but making any feature detachable for representation without the others, and allowing for the general plan to be diminished to such proportions as are practicable for a given group. This second section also describes settings, outdoors and in, plans for laying out grounds, simple Elizabethan structures, costumes, etc. It reproduces the musical notation and words for Shakespearean and other Elizabethan songs, gives music and direction for Elizabethan dances, games of various sorts and other forms of amusement; illustrates at every point where this is practicable; and at the end adds a bibliography for fuller information on the subjects involved.
