  1. Luckock has written a historical survey of the important questions of divorce and certain forbidden degrees in marriage. He writes in the Preface that he has written this in the hope that his brethren of the Clergy may be able to satisfy themselves, without much expenditure of time and labor, that the future question of marriage is not to be settled by laws of expediency, but that it can only be safely resolved by a study of its history, as it was set forth first in the ancient writings of the Jews, afterwards commented on, and its perversions corrected, by our Lord, and finally interpreted by the action and authority of the Church all through the Christian centuries. It is a subject which has been constantly presenting new openings for further and wider investigation; but I have adhered to the purpose with which I started, viz, of presenting, in as brief a form as possible, the main fundamental principles upon which the Church has based her legislation, which cannot be ignored without imperiling somewhat at least of that wonderful sanctity which God intended to encircle the holy estate of matrimony.
