  1. This volume contains the two fictional works entitled Fields of Sleep, and People of the Darkness, by Evelyn Charles Vivian. Victor Marshall is sent by Madame Delarey to find her son, Clement, on an island not too distant from Indonesia, called Sapelung. Clement had disappeared from there three years earlier. Victor travels to the island and discovers a strange formation which looks to be of human design. Before he can investigate further, he is set upon by flesh-eating land crabs which force him to jump down an incline from which he cannot escape. In this place, he meets Tari-Hi, the keeper of the place, called Mah-Eng. Mah-Eng is the only outpost left of the ancient Babylonian Empire and is really a gold mine. Its laborers are enthralled by an exotic perfume and when they cannot smell the scent, the slaves soon die, therefore keeping them from leaving. The keepers of Mah-Eng are unaffected by the perfume. Anyone who happens upon the mine is not allowed to leave or is put to death. Tari-Hi has no sons and wants Victor to marry Aia, his beautiful daughter, but Victor refuses. The artificial aqueduct that allows the river to flow through the mine is accidentally demolished, submerging the flowers that keep the slaves entranced. All of the slaves die in their sleep, including Clement, the man Victor was sent to find.
