- The author endeavors, not so much to delineate a portrait of Abraham, the friend of God, as to sketch-in the background of the historical picture in which he is the central figure: for the devious path of his pilgrimage here on earth led him from one kingdom to another people. In truth, his tent pegs were everywhere struck into ground already rich with the harvest of the past, and broadcast with the seed of all the world’s future destiny. The substance of these studies originally took the form of lectures given during the winters of 1872 and 1873.
