Dr. John Dee was an alchemist and spiritualist, as well as a very learned man. He did his best by petitions and otherwise to stimulate interest in the rescuing of manuscripts from the dissolved monastic libraries and to induce the sovereign to establish a central national collection of them. This work contains a catalog of Dr. Dee’s library of manuscripts, with notes by James on the books.
