Excerpt: Certainly we may believe that by many the principle was admitted before its inevitable issues were discerned. It was forgotten that, while the principle does undoubtedly apply to the lower, the animal nature of man, one of the chief ends of life is the conquest of that lower nature by a higher. In this conquest there must therefore rule a higher principle than the so-called cosmic one. Ill The next relationship demanding our consideration is that between the Christian minister and his flock, between the pastor and those over whom he has been called to exercise oversight, and towards whom, therefore, his responsibility must be great.1 I do not forget that the people have also a responsibility towards one called to exercise the ministerial function, but to this audience a consideration of the subject from the first point of view may be regarded as the most important.
