How did we get to this point? Well it went like this. In November of nineteen ninety two Bill Clinton was elected President of the United States. There hasn’t been a Democrat in office in some years; we the people of the Virgin Islands are huge supporters of the Democratic Party and he recognized us during his campaign. Because of that we were invited to be part of the inauguration. The Government of the Virgin Islands decided to include all three islands to participate. Out of that decision the V. I. Marching 100 was created. 100 of the best high school musicians were chosen to march for President Clinton Inaugural Parade on January 20, 1993 In Washington D.C. We were 4 of the 100; it just so happened that V.I. Marching 100 was line up in front of Delaware State University. We crank up and the band director heard us and was amazed he started recruiting on the spot. Our band director gives him a list of all graduating seniors and those interested in playing in the band. When we got back to our school Charlotte Amalie and into the swing of things, our band director Georgia Francis made the announcement Delaware State University has scholarships available for those who wants to be in the Marching Band. I did not say anything but you can tell I wanted it, I started practicing my A$$ off I did so well Ms. Francis give me the senior superlative Most Improved Student trophy and award. Then she announces in class we have a scholarship recipient for Delaware State University….Allron Monsanto. The class gave me a round of applause, I felt really good. Days later Leslie and Ian begged Ms. Francis to submit their application so they too can receive something. To my surprise Dwayne was the second person to receive his but it came from the other public high school Ivanna Eudora Kean.
