Twins Markus and Ashley (Pippa) Wallace along with their dad Brian have moved from a regular house to the downtown of their city Jamestown. A series of unfortunate events has placed the mother Jackie in rehab and the rest of the family in an apartment on top of the Sunshine Laundromat.

The twins meet Tawny, a long time resident of the downtown area and the trio navigate through the food bank, the Helping Hands thrift store and the soup kitchen. Auntie Marie runs the soup kitchen and calls the children there her Soup Kitchen Kids.

Jackie rejoins the family and her new community with the soup kitchen as its core. The family learns that although not rich money-wise, their community is rich in kindness and caring. They also learn that family is not always related by blood.
