After an acrimonious departure from their home at Westbury farm Emily and Paul move to the city of Preston where they take up work at the Jubilee hotel. Paul becomes involved with some nefarious characters and Emily finds herself alone most of her free time.

Following a devasting confession by her husband Emily finds herself thrown into the comforting arms of her friends Bobbie, Malcolm, Edith and with their help she learns to live alone, stand on her own two feet and to fall in love.
