Bubby hasn’t had a nice life so far. The owner of the puppy mill where he lives is mean and hurtful. His only friend is a red cardinal, Lummy, who provides comfort. But Bubby’s life starts to change. While he still has bad memories and worries, Bubby goes on a healing journey, developing healthy coping skills as he overcomes his past.
Sunset Hugs is meant as a hopeful resource for children (and maybe even adults) who have experienced adversity. Every chapter contains teachable moments and questions that can be read again for further reflection and journaling.
A Message from Bubby: Hi, thank you for stopping by! Just a note to say that while this book is very important, it may bring up big feelings or worries of your own. Please read the Sunset Hugs disclaimer and message from me at the beginning of the book. Notably, for anyone introducing this book to younger children, please exercise care. The first 2 chapters describe my younger years, when I had a rough beginning in a puppy mill and big worries. The remaining 10 chapters (yes 10!) focus on hope and my healthy healing journey. My wish is that you find comfort in this book and are reminded to never lose hope. Healing is paw-sible, I’m living proof.
Lastly, a big thank you to the test readers: The kids, caregivers, psychologist, and psychiatrist who provided very helpful feedback on the book. Your help and advice has been incredible.
Content Warning: physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, bullying, anxiety and depression.
