A Narrative by John Ashburnham of His Attendance on King Charles the First From Oxford to the Scotch Army, and From Hampton-Court to the Isle of Wight

John 1603-1671 Ashburnham

John Ashburnham served as the personal attendant of King Charles I and was with him through the Civil War, in the Royalist army, while he was negotiating prisoner exchanges, and during his subsequent imprisonment. In this narrative, Ashburnham provides first-hand detail about the king's movements and thoughts, as well as on the political situation of the time. Additionally, the text contains a preface vindicating Ashburnham's name against those who criticized him for his role in the king's fall.
