First published in 1809, Scottish Chiefs is a historical novel set during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th century. The book tells the story of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and other Scottish patriots as they battle against the English forces of Edward I. Jane Porter's portrayal of the struggles and sacrifices of the Scottish people helped to popularize the legends of Scottish heroes and contributed to the romanticization of Scottish history and culture.
