He becomes involved in the Socialist movement and takes part in demonstrations and strikes, but finds himself betrayed by the very people he thought were his comrades. The novel is a powerful indictment of the American capitalist system and the corruption and greed that it engenders. It is also a poignant tribute to the idealism and sacrifice of those who fight for social justice.
