Completely by accident, a miner working his claim literally stumbles upon a previously unknown phenomenon that defies any reasonable description. When he presents the discovery to a group of experts, speculation surrounding the phenomenon's origin ignites a firestorm of controversy. The tale is interwoven with several significant events of the early 20th century, including the birth of jazz music in America.
