Confessions of a Church Mouse: There’s one in every Congregation

Bre'nae Whiteley was a church mouse: quiet, unassuming, rarely drawing attention to herself. Honoring the way she was raised, Bre'nae felt more eager to learn in church than to socialize or lead groups. She found that this quiet, unassuming side of her personality leads some members to question her prayer life and faith. Made evident while gathered in the fellowship hall, preparing to consecrate before going into the choir stand. The choir president asked for someone to say a prayer, before anyone could respond the comment was made Sis Whiteley doesn’t pray a conclusion drawn because of her quiet ways.

The comment stung. After all, Bre'nae prayed regularly not always in front of others. But instead of taking offence, Bre'nae was inspired to use it as an opportunity to reflect on her own prayer life.

She found that not only could she grow in her communication with God. There were no doubt other quiet, unassuming church goers all over the nation that more than likely found themselves in the category of the Church Mouse. By closely examining her prayer life and her relationship with God, she learned that a church mouse has a special role in praying for the body of Christ and encouraging its well-being in ways that are quiet but incredibly valuable.
