The Grammar Graduate’s Parts of Speech provides just the right amount of grammar for acquiring Academic English. Each lesson is short and easy, with practice exercises and a quiz. The Teacher’s Key is easy to follow and contains additional details for instruction. Many of my students use language structures that are not Academic English. I wanted a grammar text that directly addresses these common non-academic usages without disparaging my students’ home language. I wanted to prepare my students to code-switch more easily between their cultural expressions of language and the cash language of careers and higher education. This book directly addresses these non-academic usages in straight-forward notices included in each lesson. For example, embedded in the lesson on pronouns are the following notices: Please note: ‘mines’ is not used as a pronoun in Academic English. Use ‘mine’ instead.
Please note: ‘theirselves’ is not a word in Academic English. Use ‘themselves’ instead. Also included in this book is an article called How to Use Your Knowledge of the Parts of Speech to Improve Your Writing Today! These two features alone make this workbook a unique and highly useful resource for applying, as well as learning, the parts of speech. Parts of Speech is the first book in a series of learning materials. Look for Book 2: The Grammar Graduate’s Clauses and Phrases, and Book 3: The Grammar Graduate’s Sensible Sentences to further your study of Academic English. The Grammar Graduate’s Parts of Speech is suitable for grades 5 through adults.
