Fiction. California Interest. Film Studies. Dan Shurley’s 2015 collection of noir short stories.

I just finished your book. I think it’s elegant, deft, and often brilliant. I do wonder a bit about its overall effect, though, as in, ‘Who is this guy and what is he about?’ Some poets impress you with insights while others, their taste, touch, or sensitivity. A few bowl you over with both their thinking and music. Moment by moment, you can certainly mesmerize, tease, and even astound but, again, ‘Who are you and what must you convey to us?’ Maybe my question is irrelevant to your project…–Linh Dinh, author of SOME KIND OF CHEESE ORGY (Chax Press, 2009)

Dan examines…coexisting cultures with the compassion of a medical practitioner, implying the anesthetic without entering the operating arena. The buildings that surround the imposing and important structure are all that is needed to suggest the stories within. The spectator is given small apertures to navigate the layers of information, the characters and events, all components that comprise a story structure, intertwined but autonomous, with just enough context to make a prognosis…–Howard Kleger
