Fans of John Pilate rejoice! This collection of seven independent tales weaves together the past, present and even future of characters we’ve grown to love and hate, all within throwing distance of Pilate himself. The catch? John Pilate isn’t in any of them. But he still is – in a way. Each story grows from its seed, by the very shadow cast upon it by Pilate’s absence. Everyone in these stories is still affected (and sometimes, IN-fected) by their history with Pilate.

It’s a unique set of studies for each of these characters and I know fans of the series will love digging into the meat of each as they await Greenwood’s next instalment of the series proper.

The best parts of these seven isolated stories were that they came off as literary character pieces. The feel of literary noir, historical drama, even a war story are sampled. It ran a wide gamut, and for my mo eye that makes for a satisfying collection.I won’t spoil deets here, but I enjoyed the dialogue immensely for its rawness and natural flow. (writing believable dialogue is a failure among even the most seasoned writers).

The characters were instantly recognizable as real people in a real world and the almost sparse language used the best descriptors to convey where we are and what we are witnessing with a clarity and conciseness that few can do convincingly. It’s a tight balance wire between too much and too little in the way of descriptors. Here, Greenwood almost always pulls it off.
