Handwriting Workbook 1 is designed to teach and consolidate correct letter formation for learners aged from 6 to 10. Each letter shape is clearly shown and letters are presented in shape families, not in alphabetical order.

Letters are in the Sassoon handwriting font, based on research from Dr Rosemary Sassoon, one of the world’s leading handwriting researchers. The font is not a full cursive one, but letters have the ‘cursive flick’, which has been shown to help learners make a transition to joined writing at a later stage. Research shows that this style of font is particularly suited to dyslexic learners.

The learner will practise each letter individually, both lower case and upper case. Then simple, high-frequency or easily decodable words are practised. The workbook also includes activities which practises identifying the initial sound in words and others which develop letter identification and tracking skills.

The workbook includes guidance for parents or teachers on how to teach and reinforce a correct pencil grip, plus a checklist which records progress with letter sound knowledge as well as correct letter formation.

This workbook can be used as an independent resource, or to support the handwriting and early literacy elements of the StepsWeb online literacy program. Users can sign up to www.stepsweb.com for a free trial.
